Learned the moves at age 11 but didn't play tournament chess until college (UC Berkeley 1970, UT Dallas PhD Physics).  USCF nearly 2100 from late 70's through almost 1990, then stopped chess altogether for nearly two decades. Books packed in boxes, tightly taped shut, hidden in a dark attic. This was during my former  condition known as "employment." Upon return from exile in 2007, my chess knowledge again started to improve. I even got my first-ever chess coach, the fabulous GM Nigel Davies in 2012. But increasing age, poor health, the occasional devil-made-me-do-it bad judgement, and old bad habits (mostly time management - I treat time as an inexhaustible resource)  these "forces of gravity" seem to be winning out. But I have been successful at correspondence chess (even there I suffer from time pressure, but not as much - five days per move suits me!) and I'm happy to run a club in New Jersey with my wife Mrs. K, teaching all ages from Kindergarten to Seniors, from New Beginners to Intermediate / mid-club-level tournament players.
