Named for Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus. Capital of modern Spanish province of Aragon. Originally settled by veterans of the fourth Macedonian, sixth Victrix and tenth Gemina legions after the suppression of a rebellion in Asturias. It was a very far northern Moorish kingdom, before the Catholic Christian Reconquista of the peninsula.

Politically conservative (pro-Franco, for the most part) and devout Catholic city (with two cathedrals!), Zaragoza is perhaps best known to Americans as Ferdinand of Aragon's capital city of Isabelle and Ferdinand renown, the second, "other" big piece of Spanish unification.

During the divorce of English King Henry VIII from his queen Catherine (Isabelle and Ferdinand's daughter), it was the seat of legal court proceedings defending the legal marital position of the English Queen.

Modern Zaragoza is the seat of Spain's national military academy, and boasts a well-known University.
